UV Lash Extensions FAQs: Everything You Need to Know for Next-Level Lashes

UV Lash Extensions FAQs: Everything You Need to Know for Next-Level Lashes

UV lash extensions are the newest innovation in the lash industry.

They offer faster application times, superior retention, and enhanced client comfort. With the use of UV lash glue and the Opal UV light, lash technicians can achieve unparalleled precision and durability. They also provide a stronger bond and reduce fumes and sensitivities caused by traditional adhesives.

But, with any new technology comes questions!

In this blog, we answer some of the most frequently asked questions about UV curing systems so you can confidently level up your lash game.

What Are UV Light Eyelashes?

UV light eyelashes are lash extensions applied using specialized UV lash glue and cured with the Opal UV light or similar UV LED light technology.

Unlike traditional adhesives, which rely on air moisture to cure, UV lash glue contains a photoinitiator that reacts to ultraviolet light exposure. When exposed to the Opal UV light, the adhesive cures rapidly and evenly, creating a more reliable bond.

1. Why Use a Light to Cure?

UV lash glue contains an ingredient called a photoinitiator that activates when exposed to the Opal UV light at a specific wavelength (395-400nm).

The photoinitiator allows the adhesive to cure instantly, unlike traditional lash adhesives that take time to dry through exposure to air moisture.

Why Does This Matter?

  • Traditional adhesives contain 25% more cyanoacrylate, which can take up to 10 minutes to fully cure.

  • With the Opal UV light, polymerization completes in 1–3 seconds, providing instant curing, reducing exposure to harmful fumes.

Benefits of UV Curing with the Opal UV Light

  • Faster application times for more efficient appointments.

  • The instant curing process minimizes the release of formaldehyde fumes, reducing client sensitivities compared to traditional adhesives.

  • Improved lash bonding strength that outlasts traditional eyelash extensions.

  • Precision curing process for accurate placement and improved client comfort.

This innovative technology is transforming the lash application process by offering superior retention, better control, and a safer experience for clients and lash technicians alike.

2. Is This a Solution for Lash Allergies?

No adhesive is appropriate for clients with allergies or severe sensitivities to lash adhesives.

Here’s why:

  • UV adhesives still contain cyanoacrylate, the primary cause of allergic reactions.

  • While formaldehyde fumes are released during the curing process, UV lash adhesives significantly reduce the amount of fumes compared to traditional adhesives.

However, because UV glue contains 25% less cyanoacrylate and cures almost instantly with the Opal UV light, it releases far fewer fumes than traditional adhesives. For every 300 parts of formaldehyde released by a traditional adhesive, UV lash glue releases just one part.

Reducing fumes can make this technology a suitable option for mildly sensitive clients.

Bottom Line: While UV curing reduces sensitivity risks, it is not a solution for clients with true adhesive allergies.

3. How Do I Know This Is Safe?

Safety measures are a top priority with UV lash technology.

Here's what makes it safe:

  • The 395-400nm wavelength used in UV lash applications falls within the visible light spectrum (UVA) and is sometimes referred to as "purple visible light."

  • The Opal UV light emits controlled ultraviolet light that cures the adhesive efficiently but does not penetrate the skin or cause harm.

  • Total UV light exposure during a lash session:

    • 6-8 minutes for a full set

    • 3-4 minutes for a fill

For comparison: Sitting under a UV lash curing light for 60 hours equals just 60 seconds of natural sunlight exposure.

4. Can My Client See the Light?

Some clients may see the light during the lash application process, while others may not.

Both experiences are completely normal and safe.

  • The Opal UV light emits a slight warmth, which most clients describe as a "warm hug."

  • Clients sensitive to light may notice it more, but the exposure is controlled and does not cause long-term effects or UV photodamage.

  • The human eye is equipped with natural low-molecular-weight compounds that absorb light in the 300-400nm range, providing built-in protection against UV-induced photodamage.

What About Me?

The Opal UV light operates at wavelengths close to the blue light spectrum.

While it does not require safety glasses, some lash artists may experience eye fatigue after prolonged use.

For artists sensitive to blue light, wearing blue light glasses can help reduce eye strain. These glasses are not safety glasses; they filter blue light and provide added comfort during longer appointments.

5. Can I Use Any Adhesive?

No, you can't use just any adhesive with this method.

Traditional adhesives will NOT cure using UV light because they lack a photoinitiator. Without a photoinitiator, the adhesive won't respond to the UV light.

  • A UV-curing adhesive is the only type that will work with UV light technology.

  • Using another UV adhesive with the Opal UV light may not deliver optimal results unless the adhesive was specifically formulated for the Opal system.

  • For the best performance, UV adhesives that are designed to work in conjunction with the Opal light are recommended.

Bottom Line: No photo initiator = no light curing. To achieve the benefits of UV lash applications, make sure you're using a compatible UV curing adhesive.
