If you’re still thinking eye hygiene is just about clean lashes, think again. We're talking about the kind of professional hygiene standards that protect your client’s vision, safeguard your lash business, and build next-level trust and retention.
As lash artists, we work millimeters away from one of the most delicate parts of the body—the eyes. So why are so few of us trained in how to actually care for them? Let’s change that.
At Lashin Out, we’ve introduced an optometrist-informed protocol to every lash treatment, and we’re showing other artists how to do the same. Safer eyelash extensions are not only possible, they’re the new standard.
Why Eye Health Protocols Matter in Your Lash Room
When hygiene slips, the risks are high:
-
Allergic reactions
-
Chemical burns
-
Bacterial infections
-
Demodex mites
-
Meibomian gland blockage
-
Eye irritation
-
Long-term eyelash loss
Most of these issues are totally preventable with proper lash cleansing, lid hygiene, and thoughtful product choices.
As lash artists, it’s our job to stay ahead of the curve, not just in trends, but in safety. Knowing how to talk about eye health, aftercare, and potential risks like allergic reactions or dry eye syndrome is what separates trained technicians from casual service providers.
If you’re not offering that level of service, another lash artist who emphasizes client eye safety protocols and proper lash room cleanliness will.
Partner With an Optometrist: Yes, You Really Can
We’re huge advocates for bridging the gap between lash technicians and eye health professionals.
Why partner with an optometrist?
-
They can educate you on proper eye hygiene, common conditions, and patch tests
-
You can cross-refer clients for routine eye exams or adverse reaction follow-up
-
It boosts your credibility and safety standards overnight
How to find one:
-
Look up independent or local optometry clinics in your area.
-
Send a short email explaining your work, your focus on ocular hygiene, and your interest in collaborating.
-
Ask if they’d be open to an educational session, mutual referrals, or providing approved medicated eye drops for lash clients.
We’ve done it—and they were more receptive than we expected.
What We Now Do Differently to Promote Client Eye Safety
You don’t need a medical degree to implement better eye health protocols for lash technicians. Here’s what we’ve added to our services for lash artists who want to upgrade their hygiene game.
Preservative-Free Eye Drops
Before or after the lash application, we offer lubricating, preservative-free artificial tears. Clients with contact lenses or dry eye syndrome especially benefit.
Why it matters:
-
Reduces discomfort during long appointments
-
Soothes the skin around the eyes
-
Supports lash retention and adhesive bond
-
Helps to prevent dry eye sydrome
Hypochlorous Acid Lash Cleanse
Applied to the lash line, eyelids, and under-eye area before and after application. We use medical-grade hypochlorous acid (like Hale Derma) because it is gentle, effective, and supports both lash health and client comfort.
Why it matters:
-
Kills 99% of bacteria without irritation
-
Helps prevent lash mites and blepharitis (eyelid inflammation)
-
Reduces redness, itchiness, and sensitivity
-
Safe for your lash adhesive and boosts lash retention
-
Naturally supports eye and skin health

Saline Rinse + Gentle Lash Bath
If there’s buildup or makeup residue, we cleanse using an optometrist-recommended lash cleanser, such as Ocusoft.
We follow with a nano mist of saline solution to hydrate, calm irritation, and neutralize fumes from lash glue.
Don’t forget:
-
Use disposable under-eye pads
-
Disinfect lash tools after every use
-
Store lash wands in clean containers (and teach clients to do the same!)
How Lash Room Cleanliness Elevates Your Lash Business
Integrating lid hygiene and eye-safe application techniques sets you apart in a saturated beauty industry.
Here’s what else it improves:
-
Client satisfaction: Clients can feel the difference in comfort, and they’ll trust your lash treatments more.
-
Retention: A clean lash line + less irritation = better adhesive bond and lash growth
-
Professionalism: It’s easier to justify your pricing when your hygiene standards are medical-grade
Plus, if you’ve ever had a lash client react badly and wondered, "Was it the lash adhesive? The lash glue? Something else?"—a solid hygiene routine gives you more control and less guesswork.
